Conduct research in order to develop knowledge about what your users do, say, think, and feel.
Before considering the design of any product, I usually conduct user research. This helps to truly get inside the customers' minds and understand their needs, goals, behaviour and pain points.
Insights are then gathered and used to guide all of the strategy and design decisions (along with it's business goals).

Research is referred to throughout the design process, making sure the proposed designs work well with the end users in mind.
Typical activities might include:
In-depth user research
Working collaboratively to deliver insightful, qualitative and quantitative research into the target customer.
Usability testing
Usability testing is a method used to evaluate how a user interacts with an existing product. The tests take place with real users to measure how ‘usable’ or ‘intuitive’ a website or application is and how easy it is for users to reach their goals.

Understanding what's already out there helps to identify the advantages and disadvantages that already exist within a product and a great way to help define usability issues.

Research leads to:
The understanding of the customers/end users, their pain points, goals, behaviours and expectations
Identifying opportunities by discovering trends across markets and customer types
Working collaboratively with you to build a vision, objectives & action plan for your customer experience
Creating personas & customer journey maps to use in strategy, design and long-term decision making
